Since moving to Boston in the fall of 2020, Spencer Hudson has been making a name for himself as a freelance musician. He serves as the bass trombonist for both the Du Bois Orchestra and the New England Repertory Orchestra, is the trombone professor at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH, and works as a brass instructor for both the Medway School District and Dedham School of Music in Massachusetts.
As a performer, Spencer has had the opportunity to work with the Mississippi Opera, the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra, the Acadian Wind Symphony, the Skyliners Big Dance Band, and many of the orchestras throughout the New England area. As a soloist, Spencer has been named a finalist for the 2019 American Trombone Workshop Division II Bass Trombone Solo Competition, placed 3rd at the 2019 International Women's Brass Conference’ Susan Slaughter Division I Bass Trombone Solo Competition, was a member of the 1st place grand prize winning group of the 2019 International Women’s Brass Conference’s Ginger Turner Ensemble Competition (The Greenwood Trombone Octet), placed 2nd in the 2020 Chamber Music Tulsa Robert Heckman Solo Competition, was a finalist for the 2020 Delta Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition, placed 3rd in the 2021 Triangle Brass Virtual Music Competition, and has even been featured as a soloist with the New England Brass Band, a British style brass band under the direction of Terry Everson.
Prior to his time in New England, Spencer worked as the graduate teaching assistant for the Oklahoma State University trombone studio and as the low brass instructor for the Perkins-Tryon school district. His students have gone on to place in competitions, make honor bands, and be accepted into summer festivals and collegiate music programs. Spencer Hudson holds degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi (BM), Oklahoma State University (MM), and is currently finishing up his Doctorate of Musical Arts at Boston University. His primary teachers are Scott Landry, Dr. Ben McIlwain, Paul Compton, Don Lucas, Gabe Langfur Rice, and Ilan Morgenstern. When not playing trombone, Spencer can be found in the kitchen baking with his partner Casey, and their pet rabbit Milo.
