The Fall term starts September 12 and runs through January 2023. Register here. If you sign up by July 15 and pay 25% of the tuition, you lock in this past year’s rate and have first choice of time slots for private lessons. Payment: Many of you have asked about using credit cards for tuition payment. We are accepting them again as payment, but will add a 5% processing fee to cover the costs we pay to the credit card companies. The Dedham Community Band has been busy this past month, playing at Dedham Pride, Juneteenth Celebration, and playing with the Bluegrass Jam at the Endicott Estate!. Rehearsals resume in the Fall, so be sure to join the fun! Our bluegrass jams are taking July and Aug off and will be back in September. Stay tuned for more… Free Classical Music Concerts at New England Conservatory in July! Students, faculty, and friends of Dedham School of Music are welcome to enjoy free classical music concerts featuring the Emerging Artist Recital series presenting the students from the training program and several Artists in Residence concerts with notable performers from around the globe. Morningside Music Bridge has selected 65 outstanding musicians, aged 12 to 18, from 11 countries to take part. Representing the highest international standards of excellence, the young violinists, violists, cellists, and pianists will receive full scholarships for a month of intensive training. The program will be held in person at the New England Conservatory from July 7 to 30 and all recitals and concerts are free and open to the public. The full schedule can be viewed here. Daniel is a Boston-based percussionist and multi-instrumentalist. He earned his B.M in percussion at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Daniel plays a wide range of percussion instruments from marimba to timpani. He’s studied a range of musical traditions and instruments from across the globe. Daniel is influenced by his teachers’ love for helping students navigate their passion for music and has been teaching percussion, piano, and music theory since 2015. We also welcome Seychelle Corbin-Dunn, new faculty member for Winds and piano. She will be teaching saxophone, flute, and clarinet and has her doctorate in Performance on Baritone Sax. Seychelle Dunn-Corbin, D.M.A. is a Boston-based saxophonist known for her dedication and advocacy of works by BIPOC and womxn composers. A first-generation college graduate, Seychelle has studied at Morgan State University, Longy School of Music of Bard College, and Boston University, recently completing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone Performance. Currently, Seychelle is a standing member of NorthStar Duo, Area 9 Saxophone Quartet, and Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra and adjunct faculty at Bunker Hill Community College and Salem State University. She is highly involved in serving the surrounding South Shore community and was elected as the Treasurer of the Omega Eta Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and recently appointed as the Undergraduate Coordinator of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and continues to serve as Atlantic Region Reclamation Co-Coordinator. And we also welcome Kelly Powers, Jazz piano who is taking over the Jazz band as well as teaching piano. Kelly Powers—pianist, composer, and educator—is an artist actively performing and recording on the New York City and Boston jazz scenes. She graduated magna cum laude from Jackie McLean’s Institute for Jazz Studies at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford. She also received an M. M. in Jazz Performance from Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Dave Liebman and Garry Dial, among others. Kelly has performed with many renowned jazz artists including Jimmy Heath, Eddie Henderson, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, Jeremy Pelt, Gregg August, Dezron Douglas, and Luques Curtis. She has also performed and toured with many big bands including the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Cab Calloway Orchestra, Jack Jeffers NYC Classics, George Gee’s Swing Orchestra, and Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra. She has played many venues around the world, including: Jazz Cafe (London), Body and Soul (Tokyo), Cafe Rosenberg (Reykjavik), Jazz Club (Barcelona); Smoke, Cleopatra’s Needle, Kitano, Zinc Bar, Swing 46, Minton’s Playhouse, the Carlyle, and the Rainbow Room—all in New York City; and Scullers and the Regattabar in Boston. She has released two original albums: The Kelly Powers Trio (featuring Grammy nominated drummer Kendrick Scott) and The Kelly Powers Project (co-produced by Harold Mabern), on which she composed and arranged all of the repertoire. Kelly is the former Director of Jazz Combos at Albright College and taught online courses: Jazz History and Pop Music History. She has been teaching piano for the last fourteen years, has served on faculty at Northeastern University and the New England Conservatory of Music in the Preparatory and Continuing Education Departments. Previously, she taught jazz piano at Swarthmore College and served as Head of the Keyboard Department at the True School of Music in Mumbai, India, also teaching courses in improvisation and ear training, and hosting the school’s first ever jam session. While abroad, she performed at the Mahindra Blues Festival, opening for the Grammy Award winner Derek Trucks. Both Kelly and Seychelle were hired for September but both jumped right in to cover lessons and the jazz band this summer. Daniel begins teaching on August 1. Release date TBA soon, but it will likely be August (we're just waiting for the commissioned album cover art to be finished). It's not out yet, but I will keep you posted. It's gritty, it's angry yet with empathy, and it's REALLY heavy.
